‘Complicity with Evil’

Today is Holocaust memorial day, a day to remember those who lost their lives due to the genocide that happened during world war two. This week I finished reading a book called ‘Complicity with Evil’, it details the failure of the United Nations (the organisation set up with the principle of ensuring the holocaust never happened again) in the age of recent genocide.
I often read books that infuriate me, make me question humanity and the everything around me, but this book really let me dumbfounded. After WW2, many vowed that another tragedy like that one could happen again, but since then we have had the mass slaughter of Bosnian Muslims, the horrendous genocide in Rwanda and most recently Darfur. That is three well known examples of genocide in the last twenty years and each and every time the United Nations has failed to uphold what it was set up to do, each and every time our nations have stood by whilst these things have happened. Yet every year the United Nations and world governments have holocaust memorial day and reiterate this world promise that tragedies like this should never happen, but once this day has passed, so do these thoughts, and instead of upholding this promise, they become complicit with the evil they have sworn to get rid of for the past 60 years.
Read the book and see if you can understand how our leaders became so lost in their rhetoric that they forgot how to ever take action…
