I’m a ‘liberal’, a wooly one if you like, I believe in free-speech. I don’t believe in free-speech which allows you to say whatever you want, a contradiction you say, well no, not really, as any person who actually knows law will tell you that freedom of speech is not an absolute right. And neither should it be, unbridled expression would cause people no end of harm and this is why there are laws on hate speech. Now in the 21st century, the age of social media and technology, everyone has an opinion, these opinions come from all over the place (at least in theory they do), the internet and twitter in particular has given everyone a voice to express these opinons and exercise their right to free speech.
I believe in these concepts, I think the internet has done a wonderful thing. But I must admit, I do quite often sit and think that, there may be no better argument against freedom of speech than spending a few hours on the internet, twitter especially.
